Steve Bedwell

Steve Bedwell is a television host, a radio personality, a producer, an ARIA nominated recording artist, an author and a very funny comedian.

RADIO

Steve is probably best known in radio circles as being one half of the highly successful Melbourne Triple M breakfast radio duo, Timbo & Bedders. He and Tim Smith held down the breakfast slot from 1998 until the end of 2001. In 2002 Steve moved to mornings, where coincidentally he and Tim first came together on radio in 1997 as The Squirrel Grippers. During his time at Triple M, Steve, along with Tim were nominated for and reached finalist status of several RAWARD catagories including Best On-Air Team.

Since 2002, Steve has been building a career in talk-back at 3AW, where he has been a regular panellist on the Sunday Morning program as well as doing fill in shifts for Ernie Sigley. During his time at 3AW, Steve has also filled in for Dennis Walter and Mike Brady.

Steve started his journey to radio success in 1989 as a writer and performer for the Triple J Breakfast program and 1991 he also started as a writer for the 2-Day FM breakfast crew.

1994 saw Steve take a big step in radio to the Adelaide station SA-FM as the host of the breakfast show. In 1995 the show was renamed Steve Bedwell and the Crew and it continued up until the end of 1996 when Steve decided to move to back to Melbourne, as mentioned above to join Triple M.

During Steve's time at SA-FM he was also a regular guest on the Martin Molloy drive time show that was syndicated nationally through the Austereo Network. He also hosted a Sunday afternoon show on Melbourne's Fox FM named The Steve Bedwell Experience. In 1996 the show was moved to Sunday mornings and renamed The Steve Bedwell Sunday Brunch.

TELEVISION

As impressive as this is, radio is only one of Steve's talents. Television is also a huge part of his career.

1993 saw Steve move to Melbourne from his home in Sydney to take up the position of Head Writer of the Artist Services produced channel seven program Tonight Live With Steve Vizard. Steve was also a regular guest on the program and part of the on screen 'family, making more than twenty guest appearances on the show. Steve then moved on as a writer for the sketch comedy program, Full Frontal during the 1994 and 1995 seasons of the show.

During 1995 Steve was a host and feature performer on the ABC stand up comedy series Something Hot Before Bed. He kept busy during 1996 as writer/performer for advertisements for OPTUS VISION, a writer/performer for a pilot for the Ten Network named Re-Run Au-Go-Go, a writer for FOXTEL program Shark Bay as well as writing and performing for other pilot television programs such as Channel Nine's In Melbourne Tonight.

In 1996 Steve started as a co-host, along with Glenn Robbins and Lavinia Nixon, on a series of chat show/discussion pieces for the Comedy Channel on FOXTEL which were used during the evenings as breakers in between shows, and as introductions to up-coming programs.

In December 1996 Steve was the host and producerof a Seven Network tonight show pilot called Up Late With Steve Bedwell. Whist making this pilot Steve also produced the pilot for Eric Bana's tonight show. In 1997 Seven picked up Eric's show and Steve was the Producer of The Eric Bana Show - Live.

In 1997 Steve became host of his own show on the Comedy Channel, Bedders Time. Bedders Time was a series of celebrity interviews and stand up comedy pieces. Bedders Time ran from 1997 right through until the end of 1998 and gave Steve the chance to interview some of the country's highest profiled celebrities.

In 1999 Steve flew to L.A & New York for the Comedy Channel to interview, Jay Lenno, Connan O'Brien and Chris Rock, he was the first Australian to interview these superstar comedians face to face.

The year 2000 saw Steve in a key role on the channel 9 show Russell Gilbert Live as the creative consultant and guest presenter.

In 2003 and 2004 Steve worked as a writer for the TV Week Logie Awards, and was responsible for the critically acclaimed cold-opener from the 2003 awards.

Steve currently has several television projects under development and is Creative Producer on Channel 9's The Footy Show.

LIVE PERFORMANCE & BEYOND

Apart from his radio and television career, Steve is also a hilarious stand up comedian. He has performed in major comedy venues all across Australia and overseas including feature shows at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

He has performed sell out shows at The National Theatre and The Comedy Club as well as a fourteen week season at The Mercury Lounge at Melbourne's Crown Casino and the Comedy Room at Sydney Casino. Steve has also proven to be an excellent corporate comedian and host having performed for such companies as LINFOX, COCA-COLA, TOYOTA, GE CAPITAL and NESTLE PETERS.

Steve has also hosted functions for the JNF and UIA, as well as for three years being the Master of Ceremonies for the annual Make-A-Wish Foundation ball.

Steve has also performed stand-up on all Australian television networks on shows as diverse as Midday and Live & Kicking.

At this point allot of performers would be content with a superb career in radio, television and stand up comedy. However there is more. Steve has written for the Herald Sun, Sydney Morning Herald as well as during his time on radio in Adelaide a weekly column in the Adelaide Advertiser.

In November 1992 Steve released a 45,000 word humorous Australian social history book titled Suburban Icons: A Celebration Of The Everyday. It was published by ABC books and received critical success and sold out.

In December 1997 Steve co-produced and released an album named The Squirrel Grippers - Nine Inch Males. The album was a compilation of the Triple M morning show that he and Tim Smith hosted in 1997, it also included some of their live material. The album was a great success and was nominated for the best comedy album at the 1998 ARIA awards.

In terms of corporate events, Steve is a specialist, he reads the crowd beautifully and always leaves them laughing, his skill to MC an event and stick to a tight running schedule is 1st class as a result of his years on radio broadcasting.
